3 tips for stay-at-home moms looking for a job after divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 6, 2017 | Family Law |

Divorcing as a stay-at-home mom can be daunting. You might be wondering how you will be able to financially support yourself. Although you might get some alimony from your soon to be ex husband, this may only be a temporary solution. You might have to re-enter the workforce for the first time in many years.

Getting a job after being a stay-at-home mom can be a daunting idea. Where do you even start? It might seem impossible, but many women have done it, and you can, too. Here are some steps you can take to help get a job after divorce.

1. Revisit your resume

If it has been years since you have put your resume together, it probably needs some work. Review best practices online and ask friends who work to look over your draft and give you feedback. You will especially need to assess your strengths and emphasize them to hiring managers.

Just because you have not held formal employment does not mean you do not have valuable skills or experience. Have you been responsible for the household budget? What about volunteer work? Do you run a small business from home? Answering these questions will help you craft a winning resume to get you back to work.

2. Utilize your network

Tell your friends and family members that you are looking for a new job. A personal recommendation from someone you know can help you get noticed. Your network is the perfect way to get your foot in the door ahead of the competition.

3. Use online tools and recruiters

If it has been some time since you last worked, you might not realize the value of using the web to find a job. There are multiple sites online for networking, posting your resume and finding jobs. You might consider contacting a recruiter to help you out.

There are even companies out there who take part in re-entry initiatives to help people like you get a job after divorce, according to Vogue. If you follow these tips early, you can get a head start on finding your new job.
