Is your marriage a casualty of ‘divorce day?’

On Behalf of | Jan 10, 2020 | High-asset Divorce |

So, how was your Monday this week? If you are married and you or your spouse didn’t file for divorce, you may have dodged a bullet.

That’s because the first Monday of the new year after the holiday itself has earned itself the moniker “divorce day.” Why is that, you might ask.

It’s because family law attorneys have noticed an uptick in the number of inquiries on that day from potential clients interested in getting divorced.

For many, it may be part of their New Year resolutions, to shed themselves of dysfunctional relationships that haven’t worked well in a long time.

Others may have just reached their limit due to the increased downtime over the holidays when they had to spend more time with their spouses and in-laws than they could comfortably stand.

Still other couples may have struggled mightily to hold it together through the end of the year to give the kids one final Christmas with an intact family. Now that the holidays are past, they are ready to move on and file for divorce.

Regardless of the reason, if you are facing 2020 with a divorce looming ahead, you need to be very prepared. Discuss your concerns with an Atlanta family law attorney before you make any moves that could diminish your negotiating power.

You will need to determine your priorities in the divorce. Keeping primary custody of the kids, remaining in the family home and getting spousal support until you can become financially independent all are goals worth exploring and pursuing. You and your divorce attorney will need to strategize carefully to get you the best possible outcome.
